Luke Kilvert, Fire and Health and Safety Specialist, Bridgnorth Aluminium: My name’s Luke Kilvert. I’m the fire and health and safety specialist here at Bridgnorth Aluminium. We look after the fire systems, emergency lights, extinguishers, and we maintain compliance with all the fire systems there on site.
We are currently looking at about 91 fire alarm panels on site. Astro maintains 80 of our fire alarm systems on site.
My job role is compliance, to make sure that the maintenance is being done correctly, at the right times, the right way, and to double check on Astro’s work. They provide us with services quotations when we need it. Due to the nature of the site and how complicated it is, all our systems are bespoke.
Astro have been on site for over three years. They maintain all our gas systems, so CO2, Inergen and Novec systems, that protect high risk areas, substations and control rooms.
Due to his contract, he’s got a four hour response time to be on site, and he’s never gone past that deadline.
We had an issue on one of our mills. Production is the most important thing on our site. The mill was actually down due to this event. It was around 11 o’clock at night. One quick phone call and we had an Astro engineer within two hours. Obviously for our production needs, the quicker the better. Rectified the fault, back up and running.
They were on the phone immediately to give us any advice and support that we’d needed to get the plant back up and running. Other suppliers, sometimes you have to go through call centres to get advice, where with them guys we can get through straight away. It’s all about speed. That’s why we chose Astro in the first place.
We’ve gained a great relationship with Astro. We know them well on a personal level. Astro understand all our needs on this site. They have fantastic site knowledge and they’re always willing to adapt their business to aid us.
Due to the nature of the business and how complicated the site is, we often have days of non-production. Those days are so important to have systems serviced. Dave, at short notice, can manoeuvre his engineers to best suit us on this site. That’s very important.
When they do install new systems, they do guide me through what they’re doing so I can understand more in depth how the system actually works.
So when Astro come on site for new projects, they take measurements of whatever system they’re putting in the room, whether they go into the substations or the control rooms. From that they’re given a plan of action. Because of how complex those measurements are, Astro give me a figure of how much of the inert gas they need in that room. It just simplifies things. I trust Astro in providing us with the right information.
To me, in them three years, Astro really help us protect these assets that we have here. And I feel like if they could upgrade and maintain our systems, which are so complex, they could be an asset for any other companies.
