Cabinet Fire Protection for Electrical Enclosures

Electrical enclosures are vital to the operation of commercial, industrial, and public facilities - but they also present a unique fire risk.

Whether it's a control panel, server cabinet, or switchboard, enclosed electrical systems can be vulnerable to faults, overheating or equipment failure.

At Astro Fire Systems, we provide smart, automatic fire suppression solutions tailored to protect these critical systems, before a minor fault becomes a major fire.

Why Electrical Enclosures Need Specialised Protection

Enclosures can conceal the early signs of a fire. Faulty wiring or overheating components inside sealed panels often go unnoticed until significant damage has occurred. Because these enclosures are usually installed in groups or close to other equipment, a single fire can escalate rapidly.

A dedicated cabinet fire suppression system ensures any incident is detected and extinguished at the source, helping to minimise damage, reduce equipment downtime, and safeguard the surrounding environment.

How the System Works

Our systems are entirely self-contained and do not require mains power to operate. At the heart of the design is a flexible heat-sensitive detection tube routed through each enclosure. If high temperatures or flame are detected, the tube bursts at the hottest point. This triggers the release of a clean agent directly into the enclosure, rapidly suppressing the fire.

Key benefits:

  • Self-activating with no external power required
  • Detects and suppresses fire at the source
  • Fast response reduces fire spread and asset loss
  • Continuous 24/7 protection, even when unattended

Suitable for a Range of Enclosure Types

This fire suppression technology is highly versatile and ideal for:

  • Motor Control Centres (MCCs)
  • Electrical distribution panels
  • Server and IT cabinets
  • Communication equipment
  • Switchgear and automation panels

Each system can protect up to four enclosures, each fitted with its own detection tubing. This modular approach allows for cost-effective and scalable fire protection.

Certified to the Highest Standards

Our cabinet fire protection systems are certified to LPCB LPS 1666, which includes approval for use in enclosures with ventilation and airflow (e.g. open vents or fans).

These systems are constructed using UL-listed detection tubing and undergo rigorous quality assurance to ensure performance in real-world conditions. They remain effective even if fans or vents are added later during equipment upgrades.

Clean, Safe and Environmentally Responsible

We use 3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid - a sustainable, non-conductive and waterless clean agent designed for sensitive electrical equipment. Key features include:

  • Leaves no residue and is safe for electronics
  • Does not harm the ozone layer and has minimal global warming potential
  • Discharges as a gas, ensuring no water damage
  • Backed by a 20-year Blue Sky Warranty from 3M

This agent is ideal for areas where equipment cannot be powered down or where preservation of data and continuity is essential.

Straightforward Installation and Maintenance

Our systems are designed to be:

  • Easy to install in new or existing cabinets
  • Flexible enough to suit complex or multi-compartment enclosures
  • Low-maintenance, with minimal moving parts
  • Capable of remote monitoring with pressure switches for system status

Because the protection is focused only on the enclosure's internal volume, it requires significantly less agent than room-based suppression systems, resulting in long-term cost savings.
