Inert Gaseous Extinguishing Fire Suppression Systems
What is an Inert Gas Suppression System
An inert fire suppression system is an effective, safe and environmentally friendly fixed fire fighting system. They generally contain a bank of pressurised cylinders that consist of an Inert gas. Dedicated discharge pipework is installed from the cylinder bank to the protected area. A number of discharge nozzles will be connected to the pipework within that protected space. Via a dedicated fire extinguishing control panel, when a fire is detected a solenoid is operated at the cylinder bank to enable the release of the Inert Gas into the protected area.

Common agents used in gas extinguishing cylinders
Inert Gas Fire Suppression systems use extinguishing agents that are made up of a mixture of naturally occurring gases to provide the extinguishing agent. The most common agents are:
-
IG55 - Combination of 50% Argon and 50% Nitrogen
-
IG541 - Combination of 52% Nitrogen, 40% Argon and 8% CO2
-
IG100 - is 100% Nitrogen
The similarity with these systems is they reduce the oxygen levels within the protected space to extinguish the fire but maintaining oxygen concentration levels for sustaining life.
