At Astro Fire Systems, we’re not just ticking compliance boxes - we’re working to raise the standard of fire protection across the UK. One area that continues to be overlooked in both new builds and retrofit projects is sprinkler monitoring.

While fire detection systems receive careful attention, the supporting infrastructure, including pumps, valves, and water supplies, often operates silently in the background, with minimal oversight.

Why sprinkler monitoring is as critical as detectionBut that’s changing. As outlined in BS EN 12845:2015+A1:2019, modern sprinkler systems must be actively monitored, much like life safety detection systems. The standard (alongside LPC Technical Bulletins TB 210, TB 229, and TB 236) makes it clear: flow switches, pump faults, valve positions, and low tank levels all require both local and remote signalling. These aren’t optional extras, they’re compliance-critical functions that ensure systems will activate reliably in the event of a fire.

At Astro Fire Systems, we’ve developed a robust, standards-driven approach to sprinkler monitoring that incorporates visual and audible indication, fault logging, and ARC-ready signal routing. Whether a system is designed for life safety, property protection, or zone-based suppression, we ensure that alarms and disabling faults are never confined to a panel in a locked pump room.

Our designs use EN 54-21-compliant signalling for transmission to fire alarm panels or Alarm Receiving Centres, with full integrity monitoring just as required in Annex H of the standard. What’s more, we help clients understand the difference between fire conditions and faults, and ensure each one is clearly distinguishable on their panels using standardised colour indicators and audible tones. A running fire pump, for instance, is not just a status: it’s an alarm condition and must be treated as such. We see this as more than a compliance task.

Proper sprinkler monitoring safeguards assets, maintains business continuity, and ultimately, protects lives.
